It does talk, but you have to record names yourself
By Fair_weather_fan
I have a phone in my study that has worked perfectly for over 20 years, in three different homes. With our kitchen phones, we seem to have incredibly poor luck - if one lasts for five years, we consider ourselves lucky! So, when it came time for the latest kitchen desk phone replacement, I chose this because of the talking Caller ID (I had heard one in a dentist's office). It does speak each number as the call comes in, but IF YOU WANT THE NAME OF THE CALLER ANNOUNCED, YOU HAVE TO RECORD IT YOURSELF. There is a bit of a learning curve involved with this phone, and if I don't use a certain feature for a while, I usually end up having to dig the manual out of the drawer. And you do need the manual - the operations do not seem "intuitive," at least not to ME. Also, the phone occasionally quits talking (even if no one has switched the "voice" to off). In that case I have been picking it up and gently banging the bottom of the phone on the desktop - that seems to work. So, this is a relatively pricey phone that is not all that easy to use - definitely not a gift for an older relative (unless you want to go to the trouble of setting it up and programming it for your relative yourself!). But you can amplify both the handset and the speakerphone quite loudly, and in our "open floor plan" home we can hear the Caller ID announcement in the adjacent rooms (you CAN turn the volume down, which we usually do when we're going to be in the immediate kitchen area; also, when you record the names, you have to be careful no to speak too loudly, or the announcement of the names will be much louder than any of the other phone operations). I'm giving this three stars since it is NOT all that easy to program, and relatively pricey, and it also tends to be a bit "quirky." But, I do finally have a talking Caller ID, which is something I have wanted for some time (even though I try to remember to carry a cordless phone with Caller ID in my pocket).
