Excellent Phone

I was very surprised to see such a negative review of this phone posted here. At the time I first saw this review I had just come from the Nerdvittles site where it is described as the ultimate voip phone. I decided that I had to see for myself, and so I purchased one. While I have only had it a few days, I must say that I am favorably impressed with the phone in all respects. Perhaps the other reviewer was having a bad day, perhaps they got a lemon, or maybe they didn't quite understand how to achieve their goals. I think we all have a few of those experiences over time. You do need to understand that the wireless handsets are an extension of the phone, and not a wholly independent connection to your system. And I will admit that the belt clip is less than impressive. But overall I find it to be a very nice phone, and it works well with my PBX In A Flash (Asterisk) based system.

Best choice in an imperfect world

If you are looking for cordless handsets that connect to a base station, similar to a traditional cordless phone, the 480iCT is one of the only choices out there. This is in contrast to a cordless phone with its own extension and 802.11 connectivity.Deskset: Phone is easy to set up. Basic config is available on the phone (can password protect network settings etc), web interface allows extended options like configurable softkeys, and for power users (and ease of administration) these phones will actually check a TFTP server for a configuration file on boot. This is a VERY nice way to update phones either for a large # of course or, in my case, to administrate remotely.Cordless handset: It is extremely easy to pair any given cordless to any given handset, and you can have a few of them to the same deskset. You can also configure whether you want the calls to default to private / public (remember the cordless shares an extension with the deskset) but either way with the touch of a button you can toggle whether or not the base station can get in on the call. These are great for working from home because our company's users can take their cordless out to grab the mail out of the box (yes the range is that good), up to the kitchen counter while they make a sandwich or get a glass of water, etc and never be away from the phone for a second if they are expecting an important call back. We joke that we could even take them out on the deck with a laptop on a nice day and it is still simple to reach any given employee with a single extension.Deskset voice quality is on par with a POTS non-cordless phone, and cordless handset audio quality is on par with a fairly high end POTS cordless, and better than a typical cell phone.My only real complaint with these phones is the durability. I estimate we have to replace about 25% of our cordless handsets annually (to the tune of $100-$120 a pop) and the desksets have been better, but not perfect. While I'd rather pay double for a better constructed phone, at these prices we've learned to live with it for the capability they give us.

Absolutely the worst choice for a business voip phone

This is perhaps the most poorly engineered piece of telecommunications available. If you are even remotely considering Aastra as a provider of your equipment...RUN do not walk to a competitor. Here are just a few things you should consider:1. Handset has 4 hour talk time and in order to recharge the unit it *must* be put back into the cradle. So, if you are using a headset, you'll need to unplug the headset every time you want to recharge it. You might think that the AC port on the bottom will allow you to buy an AC adapter and recharge the unit without putting it back in the base. Nope! The geniuses at Aastra never designed one and although the operating manual shows and describes the AC adapter plug; the plug is not operational (confirmed by a call to their engineering staff!).2. Handset feels "squishy and cheap around the battery compartment3. Handset "magically" places some of your callers on hold and then the buttons become non-functional to retrieve the call and freezes in the on position until you remove and reinstall the battery pack.4. Base station has been in operation for 3 weeks and the receptionist still hasn't figured out 90% of how to do things. Oh and by the way, you can't "blind transfer" to a handset from the base station.5. Unit fails calls that have redial with + a beginning.Base unit is wobbly and doesn't remain sturdy on desk topThere are so many other major designflaws and irritating things about this unit that I'd spend another thousand words telling you why you'll *hate* this unit. Life's too short to be aggravated by a piece of technology as bad as this is. Look for *anything* else our system will be on Ebay in a week.
