Great Microphone For Speech Recognition
By Joel K. Williams
I have been using Dragon Naturally Speaking for the past several years. There are a few tricks I've been taught to have success with dictation. The first, and biggest, is learning to talk the way the program wants to hear me. That means speaking at a measured pace, carefully enunciating my words. Think of a network newscaster and you'll have an idea of what Dragon is looking for.The second trick to successful dictation is using a quality microphone. It's surprising the type of hardware you can work with and still have reasonable results. It's stunning to add a really good microphone and see the effect it has for increasing recognition accuracy. The VXI Tria V-DC is a microphone that helps accomplish more with Dragon or with Windows Speech Recognition, included with Windows 7.I was told that accuracy in speech recognition is 70& the person speaking and 30% the hardware used. I have to agree with that. I saw the largest improvement by learning to speak correctly. After doing that, spending the money on the VXI microphone, coupled with the TalkPro 2-Way USB Pod added the final touch in getting what I've always hoped for from speech recognition on the PC.Besides the microphone and single ear piece (so I don't feel like I'm flying a private plane when I'm dictating), VXI has also included three different styles of wearing the device. You can wrap it over your head like a typical headset, over both ears and around the back of your head, or hanging on a one ear. I've found the first two the most comfortable but it is nice to have options.I should warn you that the VXI Tria V-DC is one model of several in the TRIA line and the only one I saw recommended for Dragon. I was told the difference is noise-canceling but don't have any way to verify that. You should also be aware that in order to use the TRIA V-DC headset with a computer soundcard (or the USB pod) you'll need to order a cable that attaches to the proprietary plug on the headset and terminates in two 3.5MM plugs on the other end. I ordered the 1030V Sound Card Cord Connects to the computer's sound card ports. Compatible with TalkPro SP, Passport V-series and Tria V-series headsets. Features 3.5mm microphone and receive plugs and 9 ft. cord here for about $16.00. You have to have it to use the headset with your PC, even if you chose not to buy the USB pod.

perfect combination of affordability and quality
By L. Rouse
I have been using Dragon Naturally Speaking at my office for the past month.I started with the standard headset and USB adapter which came with Naturally Speaking. I came across an excellent deal on a Microsoft LifeChat headset and decided to try it. Both headsets worked well in terms of audio quality, but were not comfortable to wear for long periods. I researched headsets further and came across very positive views on the VXI Tria headset. The Tria headset arrived within a couple of days. I've been using it at work to dictate e-mails and reports. The headset is extremely light yet sturdy. It's comfortable to wear for hours at a time. Quality of the audio signal seems quite high (when I do encounter errors, it's usually because I'm speaking too fast when dictating). I highly recommend this headset. It's a perfect combination of affordability and quality. Note that you do need to purchase a VXi 30069 Audio Cable which adapts Via's proprietary connection into standard mini-phone plug-ins.
