Arguably the best for the money

I've used Uniden cordless phones for years and years and have always been satisfied for the most part. I've used cordless phones at other people's homes which were made by other companies and they really didn't measure up, especially on the cheaper models.I bought the EXAI5580 to replace both an older Uniden cordless and a fairly new answering machine that was completely inadequate because I couldn't skip through messages and couldn't change the maximum record time.The 5580 does everything I need and more. The clarity is superb and better than my older Uniden phone. It's even removed excessive static on some calls - it sounds better than the corded phone! The answering machine records up to 4 minutes on a single call. (Anyone with a mother needs this feature.) You can even record up to ten minutes of a phone conversation, a feature I didn't even know the phone had until I read the instructions.Just note that the phone itself is not digital (which would apparently make it more secure), but the answering machine is. For a completely digital phone you'll have to pay more. Still, for the price, this is probably the best cordless phone with an answering machine you can buy. This is easily one of the best cordless phones I've used in years - great features and a clarity I haven't experienced in years.

This phone is a great buy for the quality and range. I would recommend this phone to anyone. Blows away all the other wireless phones which I have owned.

Good phone for the price

This phone has good sound - not as stellar as the incomparable DCX64x (640, 646, 648), but it's good enough for the price. That's a nice bonus, but it wasn't my main concern, since for a phone, I'm very happy (after a period of adjustment to their small size) with the little Uniden DCT646-2.The problem is that the answering machine that comes with that phone type (DCT648) is horrible - it's garbled like a 10 year old cassette tape or one that's been left out in the sun. (I tried two of them and they both sounded bad, so I didn't just get a lemon the first time.)My WalMart special GE machine stopped working after barely a year (cutting callers off at 15 sec, no matter the record setting), so I was basically just looking for an answering machine that wasn't crap. I tried several, including another of the GE machines (did the same thing as the first one immediately!), a Radio Shack model, and integrated versions, like the Panasonic 2.4 and 5.8 Ghz (the phones had so-so sound and the answering machines were unreliable).This Uniden's answering device has so far proven to be reliable and has very good audio.Overall, I only gave the phone 4 stars because it's sound is good, not great, and the overall design of the phone is kind of cheesy looking. (Uniden, all black or all silver would work, but the combo of black AND silver doesn't work, as designed.)I'd give the answering device 4.5 stars, if that were possible.
