Unsung Gem

I've used this phone in my home office for over seven years as of this writing. At one point I toyed with the Panny KX-TG4500, but came back to this one. I could not find a match for this phone's incredible sound quality - that includes Uniden - ease of use and features.The phone is straightforward and has everything I need.-Speed dial directly from the rotary dial or eight direct speed dial buttons-Mute-Do Not Disturb-HoldIf there are any drawbacks, I'd name two. The speakphone is not full diplex...i.e., you'll miss the other party if you're both speaking at the same time. I rarely use it (and, frankly, despise listening to the far-off voices on others' speakerphones). Secondly, the rotary selector sometimes goes south on these. Simple. They're cheap enough now. Get an eBay replacement.And a note for those using external voicemail (even with VOIP provider). YES, it has a message waiting indicator that's probably fully compatable with your service. It is with mine.

Way better than anything currently available

I have several of these phones, and they are fantastic.First off, I use my Sony IT-M804's four lines with VOIP via Cisco PAP2T-NA, ObiHai 110, and a fourth copper line from Verizon. In addition to having four lines accessible on the same phone, these IT-M804's give me intercom capability, as well as compatibility with the existing copper in my apartment. Love the "do not disturb" feature. I also love the solid construction of these phones. They feel really solid, and are built to last. The power from the speaker is akin to a quality portable radio. The sound quality on the handset is above average as well. I haven't heard any complaints about the sound for the party on the other end when talking on speaker.There is only one thing I wish I could change about this phone. I wish the display was backlit. I have a related Sony TL-ID10 caller ID unit which has the exact same display, only it is backlit, where the backlight is activated by any button press / dial movement, as well as when the handset is lifted. The IT-M804 should have worked the same way! It's an oversight and a shame. I'm even tempted to disassemble the TL-ID10 to see if I can figure out a retrofit for the IT-M804 to add the same backlight feature somehow. It certainly seems like it would be possible, and fairly simple to add.Sony: I wish you would return to the days where your product line included items like the IT-M804 and the TL-ID10, among other well-designed items which aren't available anymore.
