2 Issues too many
By Aaron Welt
I always like to identify with the lineage of my Motorola products and their engineers: truly original equipment gizmo guys (Walkie-Talkies, car radios, Amiga chips, cell phones). However, I just could not get either of the 2 MD7081 units I tried to work right in my house. Along with many others, I had been awaiting a 5.8Ghz 2-line, expandable (more than 4 handsets) system that would not fight with my Netgear Wireless G WRT54GS Wi-Fi network. I have been barely tolerating the Siemens system for years, so I was ready for the relief from noise and garble promised by the 5.8 systems. Here were the 2 problems: without any doubt, when the MD7081 was powered up, it degraded the Wi-Fi performance horribly. And, line 1 rang on the handset only every other ring on one of my lines. If I switched the inputs, so that that the telephone was receiving the signal from my other line, it worked fine. And so did the "trouble" line ring ok on the handset position 2. This was so on both units I tried. I thought about the ringer equivalent load on the 2 phone lines and so on, but this was too weird for me. I could not have switched the line 1 and line 2 designations on only some of the phones in my house, because my business calls come in on line 2 and no-one else should answer them. So, I returned both units and await relief from some new model. BTW, the Amazon price, review, and return policies give me the confidence to try new items, which I rarely find the need to return, but when I have to, I really appreciate the convenience.

Great system, with just a few issues
By J. P. Carnes-Stine
I replaced all of the 'phones in my home with one base unit and 4 handsets. I love the fact that I can place a fully functional 'phone with access to both of my 'phone lines anywhere there's a electrical outlet. My 2nd 'phone line is wired only to my home office, so I placed the base unit there and now I can pick up the 2nd line anywhere in my home. Some pros:* Every handset ringer can be customized. The 'phones have a ring schedule feature that allows one to set the "day volume" and "night volume" on each line on each handset. One can set the time that the "day" and "night" volumes start.* The answering system also provides a "day" and "night" outgoing message for each line.* Reception is incredible. It sounds like I'm on a wired 'phone even in my back yard.* The "shared phone book" is a wonderful feature. Once one adds a contact to the shared book, it's available on all of the handsets immediately.* Each handset also has a "private phone book" feature, in case you'd like to have some contacts programmed only on (for example) your kitchen handset.* If you have Caller ID and Name, this information can be placed into your contact list very quickly and easily* The handsfree quality is extremely good on the base unit and the handsets* The intercom feature is extremely nice - you can page any other specific handset, or all handsets.* It's very nice to be able to see at a glance whether you've got messages, without having to go into the room where the answering machine is. Every handset becomes your answering machine. Some cons:* Setting up the day and night volumes on each handset can be a bit tedious. I didn't find a way, for example, to silence temporarily all of the ringers on all handsets (say for when I want to take a nap). There may be a way to do this, but I've just not found it* Manually entering contacts into the contact list is also tedious (if you don't have caller ID/name)* There doesn't seem to be a way to expand the memory for the answering machine. 30 minutes just isn't enough.* Accessing the contact lists is tedious - you have to know the slot number. If you don't, you have to scroll - and it's fairly slowOverall, I'm very pleased with this system, and recommend it.

The audio quality and range
By S Webb
After reading every review on every 5.8 GHz 2-line system available at Amazon and hearing the not-so-glowing reports on the audio quality of the first Motorola 5.8 GHz 2-line systems, I was a little bit hesitant to purchase this. But it has all the features I need and this is their second chance so I figured they'd fix the problems. If you were holding off purchasing this until someone reports on the audio quality, well here it is in one word: FANTASTIC.No hum, no buzz, no garbled audio. Just crystal clear sound even with both lines going at once. I'm stretching the incoming signal a bit as I have two Lingo VoIP boxes merged to one very old and rather long phone cord going into the MD7081. Still, dead silence when I am not talking. It is so quiet that my first few callers thought I left the phone when I was just not talking (while jotting down what they had said). The come in loud and clear. One caller even mentioned how natural my outgoing message sounded. The feedback audio (hearing your voice in your headset) is not over-powering like some have mentioned with the Uniden. Quite comfortable. The sound out of all the speakerphones is quite good, though when you talk you sound a bit distant. Still, it is great for getting your messages with and while being on hold.I use these with a headset. I can pace the office and give my advice. I recommend getting the best you can, and spend at least $20 on one. I have an old Radio shack headset and it's great. Cheaper GE headsets just don't cut it.I get about 100 feet range from my second floor office through 2 thick concrete walls and a metal stairway. Quite acceptable. And since it is 5.8GHz it does not interfere with WiFi.Read above for all the features. It is a long and useful list. The coolest extras are the color of the display, the lighted keypad and the base speaker glows orange or flashes depending on the what is going on with the phone. Cool and surprisingly useful. The way the paging system works is also well implemented. The programming and use menus are easy to figure out, even without the easy-to-follow manual.I am glad I waited and got the MD7081. Highly recommended.
