A very good counterfeit! Beware!

I bought this believing that I was getting a genuine Linksys device. It connects fine and configures exactly the way the linksys model should. However the Mac address and the firmware reveal that the product was made by Research in motion Ltd. the makers of the Blackberry. When I contacted Research in motion they informed me that they never made the product and they are aware of an influx of Chinese manufactured counterfeits that bear their name. What the manufacturer has done is create an identical copy of the Linksys using extremely cheap components, they then load it with the Linksys firmware that you can download online. The components inside are so cheap that it generates a huge amount of heat that causes the printed circuit board and the chips to fail. If the firmware and mac address don't say Linksys, Sipura, or Cisco you have a fake that is a potential fire hazard - depending where you install it. Another way to tell is that the genuine product has blue borders around the Internet connection and gray borders around the telephone connections. This product does not. It came boxed up in packaging for "the cordia telephone company"

Compared to Vonage and Lingo, the adapter is the same and the price plans are nearly the same. I'm in the uS, but the service has had no problems so far and makes me realize this broadband phone stuff is the same as any other phone. Except as they say, cheaper.

I can talk to my parents now!

I am a student from outside the US and I study here. For a long time I've had to pay a lot of money for my international calls in order to be in contact with my parents. Then they purchased this starter kit and along with it they purchased a US based phone number (with the same area code as where I'm staying!). The shipment (international) was for free and so was the first month, so we can try this thing out. it's really cool the way it works. I call them from my home phone at the price of a local call, and they pick up the phone at my home country! if they want to call me, they do it for a very low rate (we bought a plan that gives you a phone number and 800 minutes a month to the US for $15 total). to sum it up, i'm really happy with this service. the quality is good and i can talk to my parents whenever i want to, without thinking of the price!
